Mayor Walt Maddox
(View Presentation), a Tuscaloosa native, has led initiatives to increase economic development, improve customer service and provide quality pre-k education for academically at-risk four-year old children since his inauguration in 2005.

The majority of Mayor Maddox’s professional career has been spent in public education. From 1996 to 2001, he served as a Field Director with the Alabama Education Association. In 2001, he was appointed Executive Director of Personnel for the Tuscaloosa City Schools and, in that same year, he was elected as City Councilman for the Sixth District. View Maddox Presentation

Mrs. Sherrill W. Parris (View Presentation) of Montgomery is Assistant State Superintendent of Education for the Alabama Department of Education.

From 1998 to 2007, she served as the administrator of the highly successful Alabama Reading Initiative. In 1997, she served on the Alabama Reading Panel, a group of professionals from the business community and from education who worked together to develop the Alabama Reading Initiative, which has grown from 16 schools in 1998 to its current 907 schools. This is a K-12 comprehensive strategy to bring the best research on reading instruction and the best teaching practices to classrooms in Alabama.

Parris first began work with her life’s passion, education, in 1979. After 14 years in the classroom, she became a principal with Selma City Schools in Alabama. Her work within the school system was the springboard to directing her passion toward all of Alabama’s children. View Parris Presentation



Mr. Joe Macaluso (View Presentation) is currently the Director, Adult Education and GED Testing Programs, Division of Instructional and Student Services, Alabama Department of Postsecondary Education. Before retiring from a 26-year Air Force career in 1995, he served those last 12 years as an instructor, curriculum and test developer, and education administrator. View Macaluso Presentation

 

Dr. Margaret Doughty (View Presentation) , founder of Literacy Powerline of Palacios, Texas, is an international literacy expert. As the only literacy coalition development consultant in the US, she supports communities developing broad based literacy plans as well as specific planning in workforce development, health, family and financial literacy.

A native of the UK, Margaret has been involved in literacy in Africa, the Middle East and the US, developing coalitions, facilitating regional literacy planning, advocating for system change and raising resources.

In 2000 she was awarded the Order of the British Empire by HRH Queen Elizabeth II for her contribution to the field of literacy. Margaret serves on the board of Literacy Texas and Literacy Advance of Houston. View Doughty Presentation

 

Ms. Sue Matkin (View Presentation) is Assistant Vice President for Information Services and Manager of the Crisis Relief Council for the United Way of Tarrant County (Texas). She is building a county wide coalition that is implementing a new strategic plan to address adult literacy issues. Current projects include a faith based initiative to increase current literacy services, two work place projects with the Rotary Club of Fort Worth and the creation of a North Texas Literacy Partnership between Dallas United Way, Tarrant County United Way and the North Texas Future Fund, a foundation supporting the North Texas Commission.

She also has experience as a teacher in middle and high school, in banking and non profit management. She has over 25 years experience working in Early Childhood Education and Adult Education.View Matkin Presentation

 

Ms. Jackie Wuska Hurt (View Presentation), a Birmingham native, began her duties as President and Executive Director of The Literacy Council in July 2003. Prior to this, Jackie was in higher education fundraising for over ten years in Tuscaloosa at The University of Alabama and in Birmingham at UAB. During her five-year tenure at The Literacy Council, its budget has doubled to $700,000 with 69% of increases allocated to program work. View Hurt Presentation
