What is E-Cycling?

The recycling of old electronic equipment for refurbishment or demanufacturing has come to be known colloquially as e-cycling.

Benefits of E-Cycling

  • Keeps toxic residues from entering the local ecosystem
  • Saves space in overcrowded landfills
  • Conserves natural resources
  • Reduces the rate of electronic waste generated each year

E-Cycling Statistics

  • Of the 2 million tons of e-waste generated yearly in the United States, less than 15% is currently e-cycled.
  • Electronic waste continues to grow 2-3x faster than any other type of waste stream.
  • Toxic substances contained in electronic waste include lead, mercury, brominated flame retardants, cadmium and PVC.
  • Older CRTs can contain as much as 7 pounds of lead.
  • Cell phones contain numerous precious metals, including copper, gold, silver and palladium.
  • Recycling every one of the cell phones discarded in 2006 would have yielded 3.4 metric TONS of gold!
